Fire Safety Inspector

This course will provide firefighters with the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to conduct fire and life safety inspections in Ohio. Upon completion, students will have the training necessary to perform duties required of a Fire Safety Inspector including code interpretation, applying local fire and life safety codes to complex situations, building egress requirements, building fire protection system requirements and evaluating code compliance for the storage, use and handling of various hazardous materials. This course meets the minimum requirements set forth in NFPA 1031- Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner. Upon completion, students will be eligible to sit for the state examination to be certified as an Ohio Fire Safety Inspector.

Fire Instructor Knowledge Examination

This exam is required prior to entry into a fire instructor training course. This is a computer-based, two-hour examination. Applicants must bring a valid driver’s license or current fire certification card. Those taking the exam will be tested on knowledge at the Firefighter II level, as defined by NFPA Standard 1001. Fire Instructor

The Fire Instructor course meets all Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of EMS objectives for Fire Instructor and NFPA 1041, Standard for Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I & II including how to develop and instruct from a lesson plan. Students will participate via class discussion, speeches, lectures, and in-class presentations. Students must attend all classes and pass both written and practical exams to complete the course. For certification, students must pass the Division of EMS Instructor Techniques exam and complete student teaching requirements. All interested candidates must possess a current firefighter certificate, in the preceding seven years, have at least five years of experience as a certified firefighter and pass instructor knowledge examination at the firefighter II level. Live Fire Instructor

The Live Fire Instructor course is designed to deliver a live-fire training program in accordance with NFPA 1403. Using both cognitive and psychomotor teaching techniques, students will learn methods and requirements for live-fire training evolutions such as staff positions, safety requirements, checklists, and standard operating procedures. Students will also inspect the Tolles burn building, conduct an evaluation of an acquired structure, and develop a live-burn plan for NFPA 1403 compliance. This course ensures instructors are conducting live fires in safe environments that minimize exposure to student health and safety.
